General Information

Our goal, which we feel we have achieved, was to construct a home which is as energy self-sufficient as possible yet which is easy to live in. Timber framing allows for super insulation, which is critical. We estimate we produce 80-85% of the electricity we use with our Uni-Solar panels; the back-up is a 12KW propane generator. We also create most of our domestic hot water with our drain-back solar water panels. Although we have radiant heat, it rarely comes on - not often enough for our cat who loves the comfy house we built for her! We consider passive solar and our Hearthstone soapstone wood stove to be our primary heat, and we cut all the firewood we need from culling our own woods. We burn about 4 cords of wood a year. One of the features we like the most about our house is that the Uni-Solar panels are hard to detect on the black metal roof and people are always surprised that our house is off the grid. It's also hard to detect this from the interior, too, unless you go to the technological center in our basement where computers and inverters do the magical work of making our house work.

Insulation: Stress skin panels, R-40 for ceiling, R-30 walls.

System Components

3KW photovoltaic system of Uni-Solar amorphous silicon laminate on standing seam metal roof, 16 6V batteries for DC storage, Outback inverter for all house use which is AC; Solar hot water panels on garage for domestic hot water
