General Information

ART Payroll’s new “Green” office, located downtown in the picturesque village of Tamworth NH, was the former home of the Tamworth Historical Society Museum. It was preceded by the “Chocorua Grange Hall”, a meeting place in the days of yore when Tamworth was strictly a farming community. The original structure was in serious disrepair and has been completely renovated to provide for ART’s space needs and to demonstrate the possibilities of a brighter future. It is a stunning example of the potential our aging building stock in the Northeast region contains.
Since the original foundation was compromised the building was repositioned within the lot onto a new foundation. No trees were cut to accommodate the reposition, and the buildings solar potential maximized. 70 percent of the original superstructure was utilized in the remodel. Southern Slope Builders lovingly deconstructed the remainder with several parts of the building saved for later use. The reconstruction includes a high performance shell, new fenestrations, wood siding. metal roof and mechanical systems. Local vendors for metal work, wood milling and the construction trades were featured. The high performance shell, consisting of R-20 under slabs, R-40 walls and R-60 ceilings and roof set the stage for conservation. A 3-ton Climatemaster GCHP provides heating, cooling and supplemental DHW for this 4000 S.F. plus building. A radiant slab on the first floor supply winter comfort and the thermal mass combined with sun tempered design, cooling in the summer. Hi-velocity water to air system on the second floor provides comfort year round. A full dormer partially finished in the attic is inside the envelope. It affords future growth of ART Payroll. An added benefit is the view of Mount Chocorua, the Sandwich Range and fields of the Remick Farm Museum. The 5.1 KW photovoltaic system on the roof delivers electricity and cooling. Similar to a turn of the century mill that sat adjacent to this property on the Swift River, much of the power to run this operation is produced on site.
A wrap-around porch was part of an earlier incarnation of this building. Reinstallation of this feature supplies the inhabitants with sun tempering and sheltered entry. It is framed with reused framing and finish ceiling.
The interior features reused wood from the ceiling and floor of the original structure recycled upstream into beautiful custom cabinetry and windowsills. The second story boasts the original oak floor that witnessed many of Tamworth’s civic meetings. Antique glass windows were restored as interior transoms for day lighting and exterior shed windows. Exterior shutters were recycled as office shelving. LED exit signs and high efficiency lighting is throughout. Several 100% recycled post-consumer or post-industrial source glass products were purchased for bathroom tiles, vanities and colorful work surfaces. Kitchen countertops and print stations are constructed from 100% recycled cardboard and office paper product. Zero VOC finishes were used throughout. Local art adorns the walls.
Last but not least, motivated by our “green” environs, ART Payroll staff has taken the opportunity to analyze our interoffice footprint as well. We have challenged ourselves and we are committed to reduce, reuse, and recycle as much of our office paper and waste as is possible.
